CRAP I THINK OF WHILE MOWING THE LAWN — #9

Crap I Think of While Mowing the Lawn

Volume 9

(other than This Lawn Looks Like Crap)

Interesting, if not deep, thoughts often pop into my head while I’m doing battle with my lawn. And yes, I do battle with a non-gas, non-electric, old-fashioned push mower. An actual reel mower. And my mind tends to think of some semi-interesting crap while I push along.

Mower and Statesman

Welcome to Volume 9 of Crap I Think of While Mowing the Lawn.

TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE?

Quite frankly, I usually have just enough time to bring this early Sunday morning piece to press. This morning, I’m a little pressed for time and not able to zero in on just one idea—although the World Cup, and all of the weirdness of soccer, mostly  a) star players biting their defenders; b) the insane silliness of the running clock and stoppage time; and c) prima donnas that make NFL diva wide receivers look like humble team players; and d) too many games decided by shootouts/penalty kicks where the offensive player too much of an advantage for my liking.

There’s so much to talk about and so little time, and I may pick up on these themes next Sunday, or perhaps, other crap will get stuck in my head. Stay tuned, but for now…

AN INTERVIEW WITH A FELLOW AUTHOR/BASEBALL LOVER

On Friday, I had the pleasure of posting an interview I conducted with Minneapolis-based (my dad’s old stomping grounds) author John Rosengren. His latest book, The Fight of Their Lives, revolves around a brutal 1965 on-field incident in which Hall of Fame Giants pitcher Juan Marichal did the unthinkable: He clubbed Dodgers all-star catcher John Roseboro over the head with his bat.

Of course, the book is about more, including a great tale of redemption.

If you’re like millions of my other cyberfans…okay, hundreds of thousands…you didn’t get a chance to read it on Friday, so here you go. Enjoy, and thanks!
